Evaluating integrated water management strategies to inform hydrological drought mitigation

چکیده

Abstract. Managing water–human systems during water shortages or droughts is key to avoid the overexploitation of resources and, in particular, groundwater. Groundwater a crucial resource as it sustains both environmental and anthropogenic demand. Drought management often guided by drought policies, crisis management, actively introduced strategies. However, impact strategies on hydrological rarely assessed. In this study, we present newly developed socio-hydrological model, simulating relation between availability managed use over 3 decades. Thereby, aim assess policies baseflow groundwater droughts. We tested model an idealised virtual catchment based climate data, practices England. The includes surface storage (reservoir), for range hydrogeological conditions optional imported These modelled sources can all be used satisfy following four aspects strategies: (1) increased supply, (2) restricted demand, (3) conjunctive (4) maintained flow requirements restricting abstractions. were evaluated separate combined scenarios. Results show mitigated scenarios applying use, particularly with small storage. large storage, maintaining flows reduces most. Scenarios increasing supply demand have opposing effect droughts, although these are balance when at same time. Most reduce severity occurrence given incremental dependency that satisfies up third total necessity importing shows considerable pressure resources, delicate calls short-term long-term sustainability targets within policies.

Drought Management Strategies in Spain

The ongoing debate on water policies in Spain is characterised by a traditional paradigm, dominated by the intervention on hydrological systems through the construction and management of infrastructure, which is progressively being abandoned but is currently still strong while the emergence of new management approaches. Climate change and the Water Framework Directive (WFD) are, in addition, th...

Assessing water resource system vulnerability to unprecedented hydrological drought using copulas to characterize drought duration and deficit

Global climate models suggest an increase in evapotranspiration, changing storm tracks, and moisture delivery in many parts of the world, which are likely to cause more prolonged and severe drought, yet the weakness of climate models in modeling persistence of hydroclimatic variables and the uncertainties associated with regional climate projections mean that impact assessments based on climate...

Sustainable water resource management under hydrological uncertainty

[1] A proper understanding of the sources and effects of uncertainty is needed to achieve the goals of reliability and sustainability in water resource management and planning. Many studies have focused on uncertainties relating to climate inputs (e.g., precipitation and temperature), as well as those related to supply and demand relationships. In the end-to-end projection of the hydrological i...

Hydrological Response to ~30 years of Agricultural Surface Water Management

Amongst human practices, agricultural surface-water management systems represent some of the largest integrated engineering works that shaped floodplains during history, directly or indirectly affecting the landscape. As a result of changes in agricultural practices and land use, many drainage networks have changed producing a greater exposure to flooding with a broad range of impacts on societ...

Predicting Hotspots of Human-Elephant Conflict to Inform Mitigation Strategies in Xishuangbanna, Southwest China

Research on the spatial patterns of human-wildlife conflict is fundamental to understanding the mechanisms underlying it and to identifying opportunities for mitigation. In the state of Xishuangbanna, containing China's largest tropical forest, an imbalance between nature conservation and economic development has led to increasing conflicts between humans and Asian elephants (Elephas maximus), ...
